NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — MetroCard users might remember seeing their remaining card balance when swiping into the subway, helping them to keep track of when to reload. Now, a similar feature could be coming for OMNY.
The MTA is “exploring the possibility” of displaying remaining OMNY balances when subway riders tap at a turnstile, a spokesperson for the agency told PIX11 News. More Transit News
The possibility of the future update comes after customer feedback received during the MTA’s public comment period in August.
In a September Board meeting, MTA officials acknowledged that many riders requested more visibility and transparency of payment and trip history to better keep track of when they were receiving free rides.
We heard from tap and ride customers who want better visibility into their trip history and some help building a little trust that this new unlimited ride fare cap is giving them free rides,” said MTA Deputy Chief Jessie Lazarus. “Frankly, we agree.”
To help address customer concerns in the short term, MTA officials relaunched the trip and charge history on the OMNY website as they continue to explore incorporating them at card readers.
A spokesperson for the transit agency says the MTA will continue to integrate self-service tools on the OMNY website and on the MTA app through mid-2026.
